Balai Besar (Royal Hall)

Balai Besar ( Royal Hall) is located along Jalan Pekan Melayu in the heart of Alor Setar, the state capital of Kedah, Malaysia.

It is one of the heritage and charm of Kedah state, where its original structure was built in 1735 by Sultan Muhammad Jiwa Zainal Abidin Muazzam Syah(1710 - 1787), the founder of Alor Setar, who was also the 19th ruler of the Kedah Sultanate, as the Balai Rong Seri, or Grand Audience Hall .

The Balai Besar was destroyed and rebuilt twice during the period in the Bugis invasion in 1770, followed by Siamese invasion in 1821. It was during the reign of Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Shah, the 26th Sultan that the grand hall was completely revamped to its present look in 1893.

In 1896, the Balai Besar was refurbished by Kedah State Public Works Department under supervision of the Architect, Muhamad Bin Lebai Tambi from Penang, for the wedding ceremonies of the Sultan's five Princes and Princesses, held in 1904.

The Balai Besar was also the venue of the installation of a new sultan, namely Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin Halim Shah II (1804-1845) and Tuanku Sultan Haji Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah on 20 February 1959.

Masjid Zahir (Alor Setar)

The Zahir Mosque is Kedah's state mosque. It is located in the heart of Alor Setar, the state capital of Kedah, Malaysia.

The mosque was built in 1912, a contributory effort of YTM Tunku Mahmud Ibni Almarhum Sultan Tajuddin Mukarram Shah. The site of this mosque was the cemetery of Kedah warriors who had died while defending Kedah from the Siamese in 1821. The architecture of the mosque was inspired by the AZIZI Mosque in Langkat town in north Sumatra. This mosque is enhanced with five prime large domes symbolizing the five Islamic principles.

Its official opening ceremony was held on Friday, 15 October 1915 by the late HRH Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Shah. Tunku Mahmud read the Friday sermon while HRH Sultan Abdul Hamid Shah led the Friday prayer. Behind Zahir Mosque is the Syariah Court building complex and Pre-School for Children aged below 6 years old.

The Zahir Mosque occupies a site of approximately 124,412 square feet (11,558.3 m²). Its center hall (Prayer Hall) measures 62 x 62 square feet (5.8 m²) and is surrounded by verandahs of 8 feet (2.4 m) wide with 4 mezzanine areas. Each mezzanine area is roofed by a dome.The main dome is located at the north-eastern part of the mosque building.

It is one of the grandest and oldest mosques in Malaysia. The state's Quran reading competition is held annually within the premises of the mosque. This mosque has been voted the top 10 most beautiful mosques in the world.

Ulu Legong Hot Spring

Ulu Legong Hot Spring is located in Baling district at southern of Kedah state. Apart from relaxation, visitors use to come here to enjoy the natural hot mineral waters that believe to cure skin problems by immersing themselves in one of the available five hot spring pools.

It is approximately at 66 km from Sungai Petani town and 10 km from Baling town.

The ideal time is at night when the temperature decreases, a nice hot dip in the pools offers therapeutic treatment especially for those with ailments or skin problems as the water content has high properties of sulphur at the best temperature at about 30ºC and 60ºC.

Baling is famed for fruits especially durians (King of Fruits). During fruit season between the months of June and August, a lot of local tropical fruits such as durians, rambutans, dokong, langsat, mangosteens and etc are made available on sales along the hilly roadsides.

Visitor Information :

Entrance fee is cheap at only RM4.00 per person. Basic facilities provided here are car parking lots, resting huts and toilets. And for visitors who wish to have overnight stay may opt for the chalets.

Tanjong Dawai

Tanjong Dawai is a small fishing village located in Kedah state of Malaysia. It is approximately at 30 km from Sungai Petani town.

The place is usually pretty quiet on weekdays, while fishermen busy unloading their catch onto wagons at Tanjong Dawai habour. During weekends and holidays, it is packed with visitors from outstation as far as from Kuala Lumpur and Johor.

Tanjong Dawai is famous for its seafood and dried marine products such as ikan bilis (ancho-vies),belacan (fresh prawn paste), cincaluk (fermented shrimp) and salted ikan talang (queen fish).

Among the favourite items to Tanjong Dawai visitors are salted ikan gelama, ikan tamban, dried shrimps, keropok ikan & udang (fish& prawn crackers) and cuttlefish at an unbelievable prices.

Apart from the seafood delicacies, there are 5-minute boat rides board from its jetty to the popular picnic spot, Pantai Merdeka just across the river mouth of Sungai Merbok.

Tasik Beris

Beris Lake (Tasik Beris) is a large man-made lake located in Sik district, Kedah. It was formed as a result of the construction of Beris dam. It is about 77 km from Sungai Petani town.

This "concrete faced rockfill" dam situated in a narrow valley of Sungai Beris 1.6 km upstream of the confluence between Sungai Muda, designed to regulate flows in Sungai Muda basin to augment water available for irrigation of paddy/upland crops, domestic and industrial water supply and other uses.

The RM360 millions cost dam is targeted to meet the present and future water needs of Kedah, Perlis states and as well as Penang island. Beris Lake was originally a village called Kampung Sungai Batang, contained in this village is Kampung Kuala, Kampung Baru, Kampung Tengah, Kampung Paya and Kampung Besar.

When Beris dam and lake were in the process of construction, a few villages listed above had been submerged to make way for the project. Villagers involved were compensated and relocated to a well-planned township named Bandar Baru Beris Jaya (BBBJ) which is about 10 kilometers from the Sik town and 5 kilometers from the Jeniang town .

At the entrance of the Beris Lake Resort, there is a restaurant called D'Puncak Bris Restaurant built high above the picturesque lake . Take a right turn down the hill slopes, you will see plenty of chalets provided by the resort along your way to the lake.

There are also a lot of resting huts available for picknicking and fishing activities. Visitors can have a boat ride or peddling kayak around the scenic lake. It is a peaceful and relaxing spots for anglers that last for hours.

Visitors will enjoy the breeze and windy atmosphere surrounded by lush greenery and stunning landscapes of Beris Lake.

Pantai Merdeka is one of the most popular beaches on the mainland of Kedah in Malaysia . Located in Kuala Muda district, about 26km from Sungai Petani is the perfect destination for one to relax and enjoy the sea breeze of the one kilometer stretch long sandy beach shaded by trees.

Lembah Bujang

Lembah Bujang (Bujang Valley) is home to the remains of a Hindu-Buddhist kingdom and is said to be the oldest civilization of Peninsular Malaysia. It is also known as ‘Valley of the Tomb Temples’, called Candi (pronounced as "Chan-Dee").

Since 1845, archaeological excavation works had been carried out in Lembah Bujang seeking for the uncovered footprints of the ancient Hindu-Buddhist civilisation that ruled the place from as early as AD300.

Many artifacts and remnants of the temples built in the era have been found, collected, documented and reconstructed by the authorities here.

They are now on display at the archaeological museum. Among the artifacts include inscribed stone caskets and tablets, metal tools and ornaments, pottery shards, ceramics, and Hindu-Buddhist icons.

The most prominent candi at the Bujang Valley is the Candi Bukit Batu Pahat which was built in the 7th Century on the summit of the small hill behind the museum.

The Lembah Bujang Archaeological Museum was built in 1978 and was officially opened by His Royal Highness, The Sultan of Kedah on the 23rd January 1980. It is situated on Bukit Batu Pahat, Merbok and is approximately 18 km from Sungai Petani town.

Facilities available at the museum are a cafeteria, public toilets, a book store, a car park and recreational area.

As for the more adventurous visitors, the Mount Jerai Heritage Trail hiking experience to the peak not to be missed. It's about five hours journey passing through the jungle's exotic flora and fauna. At the peak trekkers can choose to spend the night under the stars at the camping grounds located near the Forestry Museum or at the hill's resort called Peranginan Gunung Jerai Resort.

Wat Kalai

Sitting majestically in a meditation pose against the blue sky, is the 70 feet tall Buddha statue of the 200-year-old Siamese temple, Wat Kalai in Jeneri, Sik.

It is the biggest stone and clay painted Buddha statue in Kedah state, sitting on a decorated lotus plinth base and was built in 1984.

The four concrete walls of the base are crafted and rich with details of 64 smaller statues.

This architectural marvel of the solid sculpture is located in Kampung Kalai (Kalai Village) and is about 50 km from Sungai Petani town.

The village name "Kalai" came from a story that once upon a time, there was an old man walking along the river saw a pot dumped in the stream and vanished on the next day as it was swept away by strong current.

It is said to have been derived from Thai words , which "Ka" means "pot" , while "lai" means "swept away". Hence "Kalai" in full means "Swept Away Pot".

The temple is frequently visited by devotees and visitors who offer prayers and seek blessings. It is a popular place of congregation for devotees on special Thai occasions, festivals and prayers.

On the right, the picture of the place where mummified remains of the chief monk Prak Nikcrodthamadtada, the founder of Wat Kalai is kept.

Loi Krathong the famous Thai festival (or "The festival of Lights") is celebrated there every year on the Full-Moon Day of the Twelfth Lunar Month.

"Loy" means "to float" and a "Krathong" is a lotus-shaped vessel made of banana leaves. The Krathong usually contains a candle, three joss-sticks, some flowers and coins.

The festival usually starts in the evening when there is a full moon in the sky. People of all walks of life carry their Krathongs to river at the back of the temple. After lighting candles and joss-sticks and making a wish, they gently release the Krathongs on the water and let them drift away till they go out of sight.

“The act of floating away the candle raft is symbolic of letting go of all one's grudges, anger and defilements, so that one can start life afresh on a better foot. In the olden days, Thai people used to cut their fingernails and hair, floating away the clippings on the raft too, as a symbol of the bad parts of oneself one was letting go of. Many Thai believe that floating a krathong will create good luck, and they do it to honor and thank the Goddess of Water, Phra Mae Khongkha."

Bukit Hijau Waterfalls

Tucked deep in the forest of Gunung Inas in the Baling district of Kedah state is the well-known Bukit Hijau Recreational Forest ( or Hutan Lipur Bukit Hijau), famous for its amazing seven-level cascading waterfalls that create seven pools of cool, refreshing crystal clear water.

It is about 45 km from Sungai Petani town via Route 67, is a popular picnic destination especially for people living in southern Kedah and Penang.

The beautiful sights of the waterfall along with its greeny surroundings provides a great place for photographers to take a superb shots of the scenery while enjoying relaxing mountain stream and waterfall sound.

The place can get very crowded during weekends and public holidays, so it is always best to arrive early and find a good picnic spot.

There are various basic facilities provided there for picnics, camping, trekking and jogging. In addition to these chalets, food stalls, toilets and prayer room are also provided.

For those who are more adventurous, can experience trekking along the 3 km jungle trails cut through 8 virgin reserve forest that leads up to Gunung Inas (1454 m Altitude).

There are also trails leading to North Star Mountain, Hill and Green Hill Baubak. Details can be obtained from the Tourist Information Centre located in front of Bukit Hijau Recreational Park.

Pantai Kamloon Recreational Park

Pantai Kamloon Recreational Park is located at 18 km to the south of Sungai Petani town, in Kepala Batas, Penang.

For those who are travelling on the North-South Expressway, can get a glimpse of the park when approaching the Kedah-Penang border from the highway.

The park was formerly a sand mining site has been developed into an Angler's Paradise.

Its numerous scenic lakes known for the toman fish (Channa Micropeltes) is a favourite spot for those who are fond of fishing while relaxing under the rest sheds provided along the stretch of boardwalks.

With a large overgrown area nature of secondary forest and tropical cassia trees, cultures habitat pool for a wide variety of migratory birds that have been found here.

Visitors will enjoy exploring the lakes from a canopy stroll along the boardwalks measured at 1.8 km long , which links the several rest sheds and small islands in the park.

Visitor Information :

The park is opened daily from 7.15 am till 7.15 pm. Entrance admission and car parking are free. The park is gated at night to prevent unauthorized persons from entering as to avoid illegal activities such as poaching and herbs collecting.

** Children shall be accompanied by adult while walking on the boardwalks which attached with just two parallel stretch of rope guides.

Jambatan Merdeka

Merdeka Bridge or Jambatan Merdeka is a major bridge in Malaysia. The bridge spans across Sungai Muda, the longest river in Kedah, and marks the border between Penang and Kedah. It is about 16 km from Sungai Petani town via Federal Route 1 (heading South).

The bridge served as a major link for the transportation of goods and people until the completion of the North-South Expressway in 30 years later. Sungai Muda also provides water for consumption and irrigation of paddy fields to Penang's province of Seberang Perai.

It was built in 1955 and officially launched two years later to coincide with the independence year of Malaya by our Malaysia's first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman.

It was a replacement of the historical bridge (1940), which was bombed by Japanese plane in 1942 during the World War II. This concrete truss girder bridge with triple white arches shape was designed and constructed by the Malaysian Public Works Department.

Near to the end of the bridge at Bumbung Lima in Penang, there is a historical remnant of World War II bunker built by the British Army.

Lata Bayu Waterfalls

Lata Bayu isometimes referred as Lata Asam Jawa features the famous 20 m cascading waterfalls that forms a pool known as Lubok Lesong.

Sungai Pegang flows through this recreational park, which is situated within Teloi Forest Reserve in Baling district and is about 48 km from Sungai Petani town.

To get a breathtaking view of the scenic waterfalls, just climb up to the top of the watch tower provided by the park.

Lata Bayu Recreational Forest is a popular picnicking attractions among the local community where this place can be crowded with visitors during weekends or public holidays.

There are no chalets currently available, however other facilities such as car parking lots, resting huts, toilets, food stores, sundries and souvenir stalls are there to serve customers.

Also outside the recreational park along the road side, there are stores selling goreng pisang (fried banana), drinks, swimming apparatus and fruits.

Campsites are available but needs written permission from District Forestry Office before anyone be allowed to camp inside the park.

There is a 5 km trekking trail through the dipterocarp forest to Bukit Tok Bidan ( 842 m Altitude) .

The park gated at night as to prevent illegal activities in the park such as poaching and legal herb collecting. It is known that this park is rich in wild herbs like tongkat ali and kacip fatimah.

Titi Hayun Recreational Forest

Titi Hayun Recreational Forest is situated in Gunung Jerai Reserved Forest. It is classified as lowland Dipterocarp Forest. Located in Yan Besar, Yan District and is about 33 km from Sungai Petani town.

Along the journey to this recreational area, visitors would have the opportunity to observe paddy fields, fruit orchards, rubber estates and traditional Malay villages.

The recreational forest got its name from the suspension bridge nearby which leads to the starting point of the steps to the peak of Gunung Jerai , known as Tangga Kenari Seribu Tahun (Appliances Kenari Year 1000).

The trails route was made of concrete stairs at a distance of 4793 metres to Gunung Jerai Resort with 1,334 total number of stairs:

(1st Level : 1162 stairs/ 2nd Level : 30 stairs/ 3rd Level: 142 stairs) .

It is the longest and most stairs in the forest ever built that is human in mutual, triggered by an idea of the former Chief Minister of Kedah, Tan Sri Dato 'Sri Sanusi Junid in his aims to promote nature-based tourism industry on May 5, 1997

Uniquely, the stairway was built without involving the cutting of trees along the route of the timber. Appliances Kenari is also often used as a training "Jungle Trekking" by secondary schools and training centers to encourage cultural motivation to climb hills fitness and recreation and to inculcate the spirit of love for nature God.

As for visitors who like challenges, Appliances Kenari Year 1000 is an interesting place to try. Trail that berliku-Prabowo and is in the path of reaching more than 45 degrees is very challenging and physical energy mental fatigue and difficulty this may not be felt because of the beauty of flora and fauna along the trail is very fascinating.

Apart from these, there is also another interesting 3 km trekking trails to explore that leads to the Puteri Mandi waterfalls.

Titi Hayun Recreational Forest has its own attractions, which offers activities like swimming, mountain climbing, trekking, wild life discovery as well as a picnic location for the whole family. Basic facilities provided by the park are chalets, dipping pool, children playground, resting huts, food stalls and toilets.
