Jambatan Merdeka

Merdeka Bridge or Jambatan Merdeka is a major bridge in Malaysia. The bridge spans across Sungai Muda, the longest river in Kedah, and marks the border between Penang and Kedah. It is about 16 km from Sungai Petani town via Federal Route 1 (heading South).

The bridge served as a major link for the transportation of goods and people until the completion of the North-South Expressway in 30 years later. Sungai Muda also provides water for consumption and irrigation of paddy fields to Penang's province of Seberang Perai.

It was built in 1955 and officially launched two years later to coincide with the independence year of  Malaya by our Malaysia's first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman.

World War II BunkerIt was a replacement of  the historical bridge (1940), which was bombed by Japanese plane in 1942 during the World War II. This concrete truss girder bridge with triple white arches shape was designed and constructed by the Malaysian Public Works Department.

Near to the end of the bridge at Bumbung Lima in Penang, there is a historical remnant of  World War II bunker built by the British Army.
